今日は会社の仕事、取材、アベプラとエキサイティングな一日でした
Today proved to be an exciting day, while I scampered around from work to an interview to Abema Prime.
 
 
アベプラの今日のお弁当はカレー！
Today's Abema Prime dinner was a curry bento box!
 

ポテトにバターとちっこいナイフがナイスタッチ
The butter and tiny knife for the potato are a nice touch.
でもアベプラ前に食べる時間がなく、持って帰るのも忘れてしまい、結局おでんディナー

But I didn't have time to eat it before Abema Prime, and it totally slipped my mind to take it home, so I'm currently devouring some oden...

 
ちっちゃいころ、アメリカではよく母がおでんを作ってくれていて大好きだったんですが、日本食スーパーで買える材料が当時はかなり限られていたんで、日本に来た時の大きな感動の一つがおでんの具の種類の多さでした

When I was a kid growing up in the states, my mother used to make oden quite frequently. But since ingredients available at the Japanese grocery store were limited back then, when I came to Japan, I was pretty impressed by the different kinds of oden food there are here!

さて、今週はアベプラでは東日本大震災後の今の日本を特集していますが、今日はトモダチ作戦や脱原子力などのテーマを、小泉元首相とのインタビューを通して考えました。

So, Abema Prime is running a week of features on Japan after the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, and today, we discussed topics like Operation Tomodachi and anti-nuclear movements while viewing an interview with ex-PM Koizumi.

アメリカでは「９１１の日、何してましたか？」という質問はよくありますが、アメリカにいたジャパニーズ・アメリカンとして、私は３１１の日にどこで何をしていたのか、鮮明に覚えています。

In the US, the question of what you were doing on 9/11 is quite common, but as a Japanese-American living in the states, I distinctly remember where I was and what I was doing on March 11, 2011.

クリントン事務所にいました。普通に仕事をしていたら、いきなり「日本にいる親戚は大丈夫？」というメッセージがフェイスブックやSMSなどで来て。

I was at the Clinton office. I was working there just like I would on any other day, but then I started received text messages and Facebook messages, asking whether my relatives were okay.

クリントン事務所で同僚や上司と、テレビをつけて、CNNをずっと観ていたのを覚えています。

I remember turning on the TV at the Clinton office and watching CNN with my colleagues and boss.

すぐに母に電話して、親戚や知人は大丈夫なのかと確認したのも覚えています。

I also remember calling my mother and asking whether our relatives and friends in Japan were okay.

そして、上司からのメールが。あの日、正確な情報がアメリカまで届いていなかったので、日本語ができる人に日本のメディアの報道と救援活動に関する情報をまとめてほしいとビル・クリントンさんが要求したと。

Then, an email from my boss. That day, since the U.S. media was stilll reporting unconfirmed information, President Clinton requested that he get an organized report about what the Japanese media was reporting and what kind of aid other countries/organizations were providing to Japan.

日本語ができるのは、事務所内で私だけだったので、あの日一生懸命ニュース記事や他国・他団体の反応や救援活動をまとめたのを覚えています。

I was the only one who can understand Japanese at the office, so that day, I remember working non-stop to compile all the information about news on the disaster and relief efforts.

アメリカはボランティア・寄付社会なので、あの日、「寄付したいんだけどどこにお金を送ればいいの？」という同僚たちの問いかけに、しっかりと答えられなかったのも覚えていますし、自分の未熟さと無力さを感じました。

Americans are taught to volunteer and donate, so immediately, I was asked by my colleagues about where they can send their donations to. I remember feeling so useless and powerless when I couldn't respond appropriately to their desire to help.

この体験をきっかけに、その後ハーバード時代、OxfamなどのグローバルNGO・NPOでインターンをしました。

This experience and the fact that I couldn't do anything back then fueled my drive to intern at Oxfam, Hunt's Alternative Fund, and other NGOs/NPOs while I was at Harvard.

あれからもう6年なんですね。

It's been six years since then.

今日もアベプラで話しましたが、ドイツのように、日本でも脱原発とはどういうことなのか、メリットやディメリットは何なのか、そのためには何が必要なのか、国民一人一人がしっかりと考え、透明性のある議論をすることが大事なんだなと思いました。

As we discussed at Ameba Prime today, I really felt the need to have a transparent debate about what it means to abandon nuclear power, what are the pros and cons, and what is necessary for a new Japan that doesn't run on nuclear power. This is a discussion that each and every Japanese citizen needs to participate in, just like they did in Germany.
